Turned repeated code into functions.
This addresses earlier suggestions to avoid unnecessary repetitions
by making functions. New functions for reading and writing strings
and numerical data.
Also uses size_t for length of strings in many places.
Improved documentation of some functions.
Bumped version to 1.6.3
